You’ve seen them at every hardware store: small plug-in devices that claim to repel roaches, rodents, spiders and more with high-frequency sound you can’t hear. They’re cheap, chemical-free, and appealing. So do they actually work? Here’s the honest answer, and what to do instead.
The short answer
For meaningful pest control, no — ultrasonic repellers don’t deliver. Independent testing has repeatedly found little to no lasting effect on rodent or insect infestations, and the Federal Trade Commission has warned manufacturers about unsupported claims. If you have roaches in the kitchen or rats in the attic, a plug-in device isn’t going to solve it — and relying on one while the problem grows only makes the eventual fix bigger.
Why they don’t work
- Sound doesn’t travel through walls. Ultrasonic waves are blocked by walls and furniture, so a device only affects a small, direct line-of-sight area — not the wall voids, attics and cabinets where pests actually live.
- Pests habituate. Even where animals initially notice the sound, they get used to it quickly, especially with food, water and shelter on offer. A hungry roach or rat won’t abandon a good spot over a noise it’s adjusted to.
- It ignores the cause. Repellers do nothing about the entry points, moisture and food that determine whether you have a problem.
Why the myth persists: people plug one in during a seasonal lull, or alongside other changes (sealing a gap, cleaning up food) that are what really helped — and the device gets the credit. It’s an easy, low-effort purchase that feels proactive.
What actually works instead
Real pest control isn’t a gadget — it’s method: exclusion (sealing the gaps pests use), sanitation (removing food, water and clutter), targeted treatment or baiting (reaching the nest or colony), and follow-up. See do mothballs work for the chemical version of the same myth. If you have an actual problem, put the money toward addressing the cause.
Quick answers
Do ultrasonic repellers get rid of roaches or rats?
No — independent testing shows no reliable, lasting effect. The sound doesn’t reach where pests live, and they habituate to it. Exclusion and treatment are what work.
Are there any pests they help with?
There’s no dependable evidence for meaningful control of any common household pest. Perceived success is usually coincidence or other changes doing the real work.
