This is the pest Tallahassee homeowners worry about most and understand least — and almost no local company explains it clearly. Getting the identification right is the whole game, because the response to an occasional porch visitor is completely different from the response to a breeding indoor population.

“Palmetto bug” is a nickname, not a species

The term gets used for several large roaches — most commonly the Florida woods roach, the American cockroach and the smokybrown cockroach. Here's the part that matters: the outdoor Florida woods roach does not establish indoor infestations. It needs a consistently moist outdoor environment (leaf litter, mulch, wood piles) to survive and reproduce. If one wanders inside on a hot night, it's a temporary visitor — not evidence of a structural problem, and it causes no damage to your home.

German cockroaches are a genuine infestation

These are a different threat entirely. German cockroaches are a true indoor-infesting species — smaller, light brown, with two dark stripes behind the head. They reproduce fast enough that a small population becomes a full infestation within weeks, and they carry allergens and bacteria across kitchen and bathroom surfaces. If you're seeing roaches repeatedly indoors, especially small light-brown ones, that's the species that needs professional intervention — not an outdoor nuisance you can ignore.

Seeing roaches doesn't mean your house is dirty

This is worth saying plainly, because it's a real and unnecessary source of worry. German cockroaches move through shared walls and plumbing in apartments and multi-unit housing regardless of how clean any individual unit is. They also hitchhike in on grocery boxes, secondhand appliances and bags. Sanitation genuinely helps prevent and control infestations — reducing food, water and clutter — but it isn't the only factor, and an infestation is not a reflection of you.
