Here's something most pest companies won't lead with: the great majority of spiders in Tallahassee are harmless, and they're actually beneficial — they eat the other insects you don't want. A spider-free house isn't necessarily the goal. Sensible spider control is about reducing webs in living areas, managing the population where it's a nuisance, and specifically addressing the few species that genuinely warrant caution.
The spiders that matter — and the ones that don't
Most of what you'll see are orb weavers, jumping spiders, wolf spiders and house spiders — harmless, and helpful pest controllers. They look alarming and build inconvenient webs, but they pose no real danger.
The two Florida spiders that warrant genuine caution are the widow spiders (southern black widow and brown widow) and, less commonly in this area, the recluse group. Widows favor undisturbed spots — woodpiles, sheds, garages, meter boxes, outdoor furniture, and the underside of railings. Their bite is medically significant. If you're finding widow spiders around areas your family uses, that's when professional removal is worth it.
| Spider | Risk | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Orb weavers, house spiders | Harmless / helpful | Gardens, eaves, corners |
| Jumping & wolf spiders | Harmless | Walls, floors, mulch |
| Black & brown widow | Medically significant | Woodpiles, sheds, meter boxes |
Our approach
We don't try to eliminate every spider — that's neither realistic nor useful. Instead we:
- Reduce webs — de-webbing eaves, corners, porches and entryways so living areas stay clear.
- Target harborage — treating the cracks, voids and clutter where spiders shelter and where widows hide.
- Cut the food supply — because spiders follow insects, our general pest treatment reduces the prey that draws them in. Control the flies, gnats and roaches and the spider population drops on its own.
- Prioritize safety — removing widow populations from garages, sheds and play areas specifically.
Prevention
Reduce exterior lighting that attracts insect prey (or switch to yellow bulbs), seal gaps around doors and windows, keep woodpiles and clutter away from the house, and shake out shoes and gloves stored in the garage. Because spiders are a symptom of an insect supply, the most effective long-term spider control is a well-managed general pest program. Book a free inspection and we'll assess whether you have a nuisance situation or a species that needs targeted removal.
