House mice are small enough to exploit gaps you’d never think twice about — about the width of a pencil is all they need. In Tallahassee they push indoors especially as it cools in fall, and clearing them is straightforward once you know how they got in.

How mice get in

The most common entry points are gaps under exterior and garage doors, worn weatherstripping, and unsealed openings where pipes, cables and utilities penetrate walls — under sinks, behind appliances, and around the water heater. Older homes and those under mature trees (which let mice and roof rats reach the roofline) are especially prone.

The trap-and-seal approach

  1. Find the evidence. Small rice-grain droppings along walls, in drawers, in the pantry and under sinks; gnaw marks on packaging; a musky smell.
  2. Trap, don’t poison. Snap traps placed against walls where droppings concentrate (mice travel along edges) clear them quickly and let you remove the carcass.
  3. Seal the entry points. Steel wool packed with sealant, or hardware cloth, around penetrations; door sweeps; screen weep holes and vents. This is what makes it last.
  4. Remove food and clutter. Store food and pet food sealed, clean up crumbs, declutter garages and storage where mice nest.

Why not poison? A mouse that dies in a wall in Florida heat becomes an odor problem you can’t reach, and bait endangers pets, kids, and the hawks and owls that hunt rodents for free. Trapping plus sealing is safer and more durable.

Why acting early matters

Mice breed quickly, so the gap between “I think I saw one” and “we have several” is short. They also chew wiring (a fire risk) and contaminate food surfaces. Catching it early keeps it a simple job. See rodent control.

Quick answers

How many mice is an infestation?

Because mice are nocturnal and hidden, you usually see droppings and hear activity before you see the animal. Repeated evidence means a breeding population, not a lone visitor.

Will one mouse leave on its own?

Rarely — one that’s found food, water and shelter has no reason to leave, and it will breed. Trapping plus sealing is what clears it.

What’s the fastest fix?

Fix the garage/door gaps and trap along the walls, then seal the rest of the entry points.
