Finding fleas in a home with no pets feels like a mystery, but in Tallahassee it's a common call — and there's always a logical source. Fleas don't need your pet; they just need a warm-blooded host to have passed through, and our warm, humid climate and abundant wildlife supply plenty.
Where pet-free fleas come from
- Wildlife. Raccoons, opossums, stray cats and rodents carry fleas, and when they cross your yard or den under a porch or in the attic, they drop flea eggs behind. This is the most common source here — see our wildlife and rodent pages.
- Previous occupants' pets. If you recently moved in, flea pupae left in the carpet can lie dormant for months, then hatch when they sense warmth and vibration (you).
- Hitchhikers. Fleas ride in on clothing and shoes from an infested yard or a friend's house.
Why they're so hard to shake
The adult fleas biting you are only about 5% of the population — the rest are eggs, larvae and pupae in carpet, cracks and shaded yard soil. How to tell it's fleas
Flea bites are small, red, itchy bumps usually clustered on the lower legs and ankles (a jumping insect reaches those first). A white-sock test — walk slowly through the area in white socks and watch for hitchhikers — helps confirm. "Flea dirt" (tiny specks that turn reddish when dampened) is another giveaway.
