Ant trails across the kitchen counter are the most common pest call we get in Tallahassee — and the most commonly mishandled. The reason it feels impossible to win is simple: the ants you see are a tiny fraction of the colony.
Why spraying the trail backfires
When you spray a visible trail, you kill the scouts you can see while the nest — which may hold tens of thousands of workers and a protected queen — keeps producing. Worse, with some species (like Argentine and ghost ants common here), repellent spray causes the colony to "bud," splitting into multiple colonies. Two weeks later there are more trails, not fewer.
Baiting is the answer. Slow-acting baits are carried back to the nest by foraging workers and shared with the queen and brood. It looks slower for a day or two — you may even see more ants at the bait — but it reaches what the spray never could.
The kitchen-ant playbook
- Don't spray the trail. Let the ants feed on bait and carry it home.
- Cut off food and water. Wipe counters, store food sealed, fix the drippy faucet, take out trash, and don't leave dishes or pet food out overnight.
- Erase the scent trail with soapy water or vinegar so new foragers can't follow it.
- Seal entry points — gaps around windows, doors, pipes and the foundation.
- Trim vegetation touching the house, which acts as an ant bridge.
Which ants are in your Tallahassee kitchen?
